Set beside a reading chair this reaches 48.4 inches, which puts the top of the shade near standing eye level and drops the light across a lap rather than over a head. The shade is a rounded ovoid lantern of ribbed mulberry paper, 20.9 inches across, capped by a flat wooden disc with a wire carry handle and closed by a matching ring below. It is a large volume of soft light standing on a small floor footprint.

Mulberry fiber is long and irregular, and the paper holds that texture visibly once the lamp is on, so the surface reads as a lit material rather than a shade with a bulb behind it. Glare is the thing it removes. You can look straight at it from a chair without the reflex to look away, which is not true of a bare bulb or a glass diffuser. Underneath, three splayed black metal legs carry the lantern and take almost no floor, which is why it fits a corner a bulkier lamp cannot take.

The socket takes a standard E26 medium base bulb, not supplied, and works with either an LED or an Edison filament, so the choice is between an even glow and a visible coil showing through the paper. A 3000K warm white lamp is the intended pairing. It plugs into a household outlet, runs on 120V, and is UL, ETL, CE and SAA listed. Paper cannot be wiped, so dust it with a soft dry brush and keep it clear of curtains and heaters.

A light you can look straight at

Dust it with a soft dry brush. Mulberry paper cannot be wiped, so use no liquid on it, and keep the lamp clear of curtains and heaters.
