Most flush mounts are a disc. The Nolana is a cluster of overlapping rounded lobes, and the shape changes what the light does before it changes how the ceiling looks: the acrylic lobes diffuse output across several curved surfaces instead of one flat panel, which spreads illumination wider and kills the single hot spot a plain drum leaves overhead.
The diffusers are acrylic over a painted metal frame, finished in blue, pink or white. Output is LED in a warm white tone, drawing up to 36W on the 19.5 inch body and up to 48W on the 23.5 inch. Both sizes stand only 3 inches from the ceiling, which is the reason this works in a room with an 8 foot ceiling where anything hanging would be in the way. The larger size weighs 3.3 lbs, the smaller 2.5 lbs, so neither needs reinforcement beyond a standard ceiling box.
Installation is hardwired flush to the ceiling, on 120V household power, and a mounting hardware kit ships with the fixture. Choose the 19.5 inch for a nursery, a small bedroom or a landing, and the 23.5 inch where it has to hold its own over a larger floor area. Depth and fitting method are identical either way, so the choice comes down purely to how much ceiling the fixture should occupy.

No single glare spot overhead
A flat drum pushes all its output through one panel, and directly below it that reads as a bright center. Nolana splits the same light across several overlapping curved lobes, so the glow spreads sideways as well as down and nothing in the room has a hot point to look away from.

It does not hang. The body is 3 inches deep and mounts flush against the ceiling, so it clears an 8 foot ceiling with room to spare and stays out of the way in a room people walk through.
Both are 3 inches deep, so the decision is floor area rather than clearance. The 19.5 inch suits a nursery, a small bedroom or a landing and draws up to 36W. The 23.5 inch holds a larger room and draws up to 48W.
No. The 19.5 inch weighs 2.5 lbs and the 23.5 inch weighs 3.3 lbs, both well inside what a standard ceiling box carries. A mounting hardware kit ships with the fixture.
Flush and semi-flush fixtures exist for ceilings that cannot give up the height. Choosing between them is mostly a clearance question.
