Height is the only thing that changes across the three versions, and it changes what each one is for. The shortest sits low next to seating and planters. The middle one stands as a proper floor lamp beside an outdoor sofa or a dining chair. The tallest works as a marker at the corner of a deck or the turn of a path, doing wayfinding as well as light. All three keep the same 11.8 inch footprint, so a group of them reads as a set rather than a crowd.

The form is a classic glass lantern, a slim black frame around a frosted white diffuser that spreads warm light evenly instead of burning from one bright point. What is not classic is the power: an integrated solar panel charges through the day and the lamp switches itself on at dusk, with no cable, no transformer and no outdoor socket in the equation. Moving it seasonally is a matter of picking it up.

Construction is rated for weather rather than for shelter. The IP65 housing handles rain, dust and garden sprinklers, though it should not be immersed. Four to six hours of direct sun gives roughly eight to ten hours of light. The one condition is siting: overhanging eaves and dense planting shorten a solar lamp's run, so the panel needs a clear view of the sky. Along a path, set units 6 to 10 feet apart and 12 to 18 inches back from the walking edge.

Somewhere the panel has a clear view of the sky. Overhanging eaves and dense planting shorten a solar lamp's evening. Along a path, set units 6 to 10 feet apart and 12 to 18 inches back from the walking edge.
Four to six hours of direct sun gives roughly eight to ten hours of light. It switches on at dusk and off during the day without any input.
The housing is IP65 rated, which handles rain, dust and garden sprinklers. It should not be immersed.

A freestanding outdoor light is positioned rather than fixed, so the decision is about where the pool of light lands, not about drilling.

  • Along a pathSet back about 3 feet from the edge, spaced roughly 6 to 8 feet apart so the pools of light just meet.
  • On a post72 to 96 inches of total height puts the light above eye level without glare.
  • On a table or stepKeep it out of the walking line, and out of reach of a sprinkler head.
  • On soft groundCheck the base is weighted or staked before a first windy night.
  • Before you buyCheck the fixture's damp or wet rating against where it will sit. Anything taking direct rain needs a wet rating.
