Almost as deep as it is wide, Aldea hangs an opal glass globe beneath a painted metal dome, with a light wood effect cap at the ceiling, and lets the proportion carry the design. At 11.8 inches across and 10.6 inches tall it takes more vertical space than a flush fitting and far less than a pendant, which makes it a practical answer in rooms with eight or nine foot ceilings where a hanging light becomes an obstacle.

The glass does the functional work. It diffuses a single G9 lamp into an even, low glare wash and softens the hard shadow a bare bulb throws, so the fixture can sit above a dining table, a bedside or a reading chair without anyone squinting at it. The metal dome is offered in white, which disappears into a pale ceiling, or black, which draws the outline and suits the fixture being seen rather than overlooked.

The canopy plate measures 3.9 inches, enough to cover a standard round junction box. Installation is a direct wire with assembly required and no plug, so a switched ceiling circuit is needed. The G9 bulb is not included, and since there is no driver built in, dimming depends on the lamp you choose. The glass takes a dry cloth and nothing stronger.

Almost as deep as it is wide

At 11.8 inches across and 10.6 inches tall, Aldea takes more vertical space than a flush fitting and far less than a pendant. That proportion is the design, and it is what makes it work in rooms with eight or nine foot ceilings where a hanging light turns into an obstacle over a table or a bedside.

Three materials. A light wood effect cap at the ceiling, a painted metal dome in white or black below it, and an opal glass globe beneath that, which is the part the light comes through.
The canopy plate is 3.9 inches, which covers a standard round junction box. Fitting is a direct wire with assembly required, so a switched ceiling circuit is needed rather than an outlet.
There is no driver built into the fixture, so that depends on the G9 lamp you fit and the switch it runs on. The bulb is not included.

Flush and semi-flush fixtures exist for ceilings that cannot give up the height. Choosing between them is mostly a clearance question.

  • Ceilings under 8 feetChoose flush. A semi-flush will feel low.
  • Ceilings 8 to 10 feetSemi-flush works and adds some depth to the room.
  • Minimum clearanceAt least 7 feet from the floor to the lowest point of the fixture.
  • PlacementCentre it in the room, or centre it over the walkway in a hallway rather than on the room's midpoint.
  • Hallways and landingsOne fixture roughly every 8 to 10 feet keeps the light even.
