Two fixtures share one circle here: a clock face and a wall light. A hallway usually wants both, and hanging them separately means two fixings, two sight lines and two shapes for the eye to resolve on a wall that would read better with one thing on it.

Nantwich is hardwired rather than plugged in or battery run. That is a genuine constraint, since it needs a junction box and an electrician, but it is also what buys the clean wall: no cord down the plaster and no cell to change on a fixture mounted at head height. Because it is wired in rather than switched on the body, it can sit on the same circuit as the room lighting and come on with everything else.

The integrated LED runs warm white and throws ambient rather than task light, so it layers with whatever already lights the room instead of trying to replace it. There is no bulb to buy and none to replace later. The face is 19.7 inches across in either a black or a gold finish, and it is rated for indoor use only, so keep it away from a bathroom or a covered porch. Have an electrician make the connection to local code.

Sconces are the easiest fixture to hang badly. Height is set by what they sit next to, not by the wall.

  • Beside a bedCentre 30 to 36 inches above the top of the mattress, so the light falls on the page and not in your eyes.
  • Flanking a mirrorMount as a pair, 28 to 40 inches apart, centred at about eye level.
  • Above a mirror insteadCentre 75 to 80 inches from the floor, roughly 3 to 8 inches above the mirror top.
  • Along a hallwayEvery 8 to 10 feet, and measure the projection against the walkway before mounting in a narrow corridor.
