Putting a reading light beside a bed usually means running a cable to a wall box or accepting a flex trailing to the nearest outlet. The Serfaus skips both. It carries its own rechargeable battery and charges over USB-C, so the only thing behind it on the wall is the mounting plate.

The body is aluminum alloy and the head adjusts, which lets you aim a narrow beam at a page without lighting the whole room or the person next to you. The LED is included and runs at a neutral white, bright enough to read by and restrained enough to leave on late. Four finishes are offered: matte black, matte white, brushed nickel and a warm brushed brass gold sold as Bronze.

The back plate is a slim rectangle, 3.1 inches wide by 7.2 inches high and 0.28 inches deep, with the head projecting about 4.3 inches from the wall, so it sits inside the footprint of a headboard or a narrow hallway. Assembly is required and the hardware fixes straight to the wall, with no junction box and no electrician involved. Because it runs on its own battery there is no outlet to plan around, which is what makes it workable on a wall that was never wired for a light. It is rated for dry indoor locations.

A rechargeable battery is built in and charges over USB-C, with the cable supplied. There is nothing to wire and no outlet to plan around.
The back plate is 3.1 inches wide by 7.2 inches high and only 0.28 inches deep, and the head projects about 4.3 inches from the wall. It is a slim rectangle rather than a round fixture.
A warm brushed brass gold rather than a dark bronze. Black and White are matte; Nickel is a brushed silver.

Sconces are the easiest fixture to hang badly. Height is set by what they sit next to, not by the wall.

  • Beside a bedCentre 30 to 36 inches above the top of the mattress, so the light falls on the page and not in your eyes.
  • Flanking a mirrorMount as a pair, 28 to 40 inches apart, centred at about eye level.
  • Above a mirror insteadCentre 75 to 80 inches from the floor, roughly 3 to 8 inches above the mirror top.
  • Along a hallwayEvery 8 to 10 feet, and measure the projection against the walkway before mounting in a narrow corridor.
  • At a vanityA pair either side lights a face evenly. A single fixture overhead casts shadows downward.
