The shade tilts, and that is the whole design. A polished dome rests on a curved chrome arm above a weighted chrome disc base, and because the dome pivots you can aim the light at a page, at a wall or straight down onto a desk without moving the lamp itself. It stands 16.5 inches tall with an 11 inch shade, which is desk scale rather than console scale.

Base, arm and dome are all metal, the shade finished in gloss black, ruby red or white over polished chrome hardware. That matters on a directional lamp, because a metal dome reflects light forward instead of letting it leak sideways through a shade, which is what makes the pool of light on a desk sharp rather than hazy. At 4.4 pounds the base holds the arm steady at any angle. Gloss finishes also wipe clean, which counts on a lamp that gets handled every time the shade is moved.

It takes one E26 medium base bulb up to 20 watts, not included, and plugs into a standard outlet. A small toggle switch is set into the round base rather than on the cord, so there is nothing to feel for in the dark. Nothing is hardwired, so it works in any room with a socket. The box holds the lamp, the power cord and an instruction manual.
