The base is what you notice first. A cast metal column worked with a fine feather-inspired relief, offered in black or in brass, carrying an opal glass shade 6.3 inches across. The two halves are chosen independently, which is unusual at this level and useful: a white shade on black reads quiet and architectural, lavender on brass reads like something found rather than bought. Green sits between them. The French vintage reference is in the base detailing rather than in any applied ornament.

Opal glass is the reason this works as bedside lighting specifically. The glass itself carries the brightness across its whole surface, so there is no point source and nothing in the fixture aims light at your eyes when you are lying down reading. At 15 inches tall the lamp is proportioned for a nightstand, a hall console or the far corner of a desk, in the gap where a floor lamp is too much and a clip light too little.

It takes one bulb, a T-type is what the maker recommends, up to 40 watts, and it runs on standard 120 volt, 60 hertz US mains. The lamp is freestanding and indoor only. There is no dimmer in the body, so variable brightness means a dimmable bulb on a smart plug or an in-line dimmer rather than a switch on the lamp itself. Worth knowing on upkeep: the metal base takes fingerprints readily, and a dry microfiber cloth lifts them without leaving streaks on the glass above.

Opal glass carries the brightness across its whole surface rather than concentrating it, so there is no point source and nothing aimed at you when you are lying down reading. That is what makes it work at bedside height specifically.

Five rather than six. The white and green shades come on either the black or the brass base, and lavender is offered on brass only.
There is no dimmer built into the lamp. The specification recommends a T-type bulb up to 40 watts, so any dimming would come from the bulb and an external dimmer rather than from the fixture itself.
15 inches overall with a 6.3 inch shade, which is proportioned for a nightstand, a side table or a desk rather than for the floor beside a chair. It is freestanding and for indoor use only.

A table lamp is sized to the surface it stands on and to the person sitting beside it.

  • Beside a bedThe bottom of the shade should sit roughly level with your shoulder when you are sitting up in bed.
  • Beside a reading chairBottom of the shade at eye level when seated, usually around 42 inches from the floor.
