A slab of white marble set into a black oval frame and mounted tight to the ceiling. The whole profile is shallow, 3.5 inches on the smallest size, so the stone face does all the visible work and the frame reduces to an outline around it.

The marble is cut thin enough to transmit light. Lit from behind it glows unevenly along its own veining, so the pattern in the stone becomes the pattern in the light and no two fixtures behave the same way. Switched off it simply reads as a stone panel against the plaster, which is more than most ceiling fixtures manage in daylight. The integrated LED runs on TRIAC warm dimming, so an evening level is available with no bulb to swap.

Three sizes are cut, 12.9, 18.9 and 22.8 inches on the long axis, at 3.5 to 5.5 inches deep. A rough guide is to match the room length plus width in feet to the long dimension in inches. Because the frame is oval, align its long axis with the length of the room or the bed beneath it. The shallow depth is the practical argument: it passes under a ceiling where a pendant would hang too low. Hardwired to a junction box by a licensed electrician, and rated for indoor use only.

The stone decides how it lights

The marble is cut thin enough to transmit light, so it glows unevenly along its own veining and no two fixtures behave the same way.

The frame is an oval, not a circle, so align its long axis with the length of the room or the bed beneath it.
Match the room length plus width in feet to the long dimension in inches. The three sizes are 12.9, 18.9 and 22.8 inches on the long axis, at 3.5, 4.7 and 5.5 inches deep.
Dust with a soft dry cloth only. Marble etches permanently on contact with acid, so keep acidic and chemical cleaners away from it.

Flush and semi-flush fixtures exist for ceilings that cannot give up the height. Choosing between them is mostly a clearance question.

  • Ceilings under 8 feetChoose flush. A semi-flush will feel low.
  • Ceilings 8 to 10 feetSemi-flush works and adds some depth to the room.
  • Minimum clearanceAt least 7 feet from the floor to the lowest point of the fixture.
  • PlacementCentre it in the room, or centre it over the walkway in a hallway rather than on the room's midpoint.
  • Hallways and landingsOne fixture roughly every 8 to 10 feet keeps the light even.
