Valreas splits the job of telling time between two parts. A vertical wood bar carries the Roman numerals for twelve and six; the white disc behind it carries the remaining markers and the slim black hands. Nothing is drawn across the wood grain, which is why the face stays quiet at a size where most clocks start to look busy.

The marking is minimal rather than absent, and the difference matters in use. A clock with no markers at all photographs beautifully and is irritating to read from an angle, while a few accurately placed lines and four numerals let you take the time in at a glance. The outer ring is a thin black line that defines the circle without weighting it.

Two sizes are made, 15.7 by 17.3 inches and 19.7 by 21.6 inches. Both are slightly taller than they are wide, which suits the gap between two pieces of furniture better than a true circle would. The wood is left visible rather than painted, so grain and tone vary a little from piece to piece. It hangs on a single wall fixing, and the wood needs nothing more than an occasional dry cloth. Because both numerals sit on the bar rather than the disc, the clock also reads cleanly from an angle, which is what you want on a wall you pass rather than face.

Twelve and six sit on the timber bar and the remaining markers sit on the disc behind it. That split is what keeps a large face quiet instead of busy.
